Hello again, fellow INSIDERS! Captain Aude is once again coming to the rescue of your famished stomachs! This week, we will drool over Korea’s famous fried chicken drumsticks (and other parts…).
When it comes to fried chicken, Korea has much to offer! If KFC used to stand for Kentucky Fried Chicken in your mind, let us erase this association and replace it with the much tastier and healthier Korean Fried Chicken! Korean Fried Chicken is so good Australians have not waited long before bringing its recipe down under. Have you ever heard of Nene Chicken? Well, guess what? It has happily made it to Oz land! And we all know that Australians are serious meat connoisseurs… So where does that leave us? Yes! Exactly! Korean Fried Chicken is delicious.
For the new comer though, the Korean Fried Chicken scene can be quite overwhelming. Dozens of franchises wage war on each other to secure a preferred access to Korean consumers’ stomachs. Nene chicken, Kyochon, Bbq chicken… these three are only the tip of the iceberg.
My favorite by far is the slightly less known Thunder Chicken. My allegiance to the Thunder Chicken god partly stems from its reasonable prices. These days it is not rare to find fried chicken at over 20,000won per chicken. Thunder chicken, however, remains reasonably priced, at around 9,000 won for a normal crispy chicken and between 10,000 and 15,000 won for the marinated ones!
Let aside the price, it also turns out that Thunder chicken is simply delicious: its crispy, golden drumsticks never fail to delight me!
In addition to the common crispy chicken, you can also choose from several other marinated types of fried chicken: ganjang (soy sauce), sweet and sour, garlic, spicy sauce, you name it!
Let’s not forget to mention the delicous fries you can order on the side, as well as cheap jugs of beer!
To put it in a nutshell: if you would like to try Korea’s infamous CHIMAEK, -a heavenly combination of fried chicken and beer (maekju)-, search no longer! Your quest will be fulfilled once you push the door of the great Thunder Chicken Kingdom!
