Hi everyone! This is Aude, loyal INSIDE family member since 2010 and at this very moment ... hungry human! One of the things I love about Seoul and South Korea in general is the food! Korean food is varied, very yummy, and there is always a delicious dish to cater to most tastes and … wallets!
Today, I’d like to briefly introduce to whomever it may interest one of the local eateries that have filled me up more than once in times of desperate hunger…
As you may now, Hyehwa hosts one of the oldest Korean universities: Sungkyunkwan University, which pretty much means there are lots of hungry and financially restricted students looking for quick, comforting meals in between class hours… and therefore quite a few affordable and rather tasty food options to choose from in the neighborhood.
One of my favourite ones, which also happens to be located within 30-second walking distance from INSIDE, is called Kong’s rice ball. It is held by a lovely woman and her son, and is one of the cheapest eats you will be able to find in this area, along with the local Kimbap Chungook.
Kong’s rice ball mainly sells … (you’ve got this...!) rice balls, which are called 주먹밥 in Korean (read Joomeokbap). What are they exactly? Well, they are warm rice balls, which are stuffed with seasoned fillings before being sprinkled with roasted seaweed bits. My all-time favourites at Kong’s are the marinated kalbi rice ball and the bulgogi one, which in terms of price-quality ratio are more than satisfying (count an average of 2300 wons for a big rice ball!).
One rice ball doesn’t seem like it would be enough for you? Kong also offers set menus from 4000 wons! For the rice ball menu, you get, in addition to the rice ball of your choice, a fried egg, a soup and some fruit juice. Hehe! :D
Not in want of a rice ball? No worries, there are plenty of other great options to choose from! Udong and ramen noodles, porridge, rice and cooked meat combos are amongst the dishes you can order…. Spicy, salty, hot, cold! They have everything at Kong’s!
If you are in a rush, or in search of an affordable dining option, or simply for the sake of trying it out, make sure to give Kong’s rice balls a try!
Here’s a small and cozy eatery I will definitely miss!
